Professor Ian Wilcox has a career-long interest in clinical research, teaching and clinical practice in Cardiology.

Founder and Lead Cardiologist at Central Sydney Cardiology which specialises in patient-centric, personalised Medicine in chronic and complex heart and aortic disease.

Trained as a Research Cardiologist in Predicting Risk in Acute Coronary Syndromes he was one of the first Cardiologists in the World to link Sleep Apnoea with Heart Disease and defined the links between OSA and Metabolic Syndrome (Syndrome Z) working with Professor Colin Sullivan who invented CPAP. His research is widely cited (over 6000 citations) and impactful (Google Scholar i10 46).

Since founding CSC in 1999 the Practice has developed a national and international reputation for rapidly translating rigorous research into clinical practice.

Areas of special interest include complex acute and chronic heart disease including Familial Heart Disease, Asymptomatic Coronary Disease, Heart Failure across the Spectrum, Advanced Echocardiography including Cardio-oncology, novel imaging analysis (CaRi-Heart®, Caristo Diagnostics), Remote monitoring of implanted cardiac devices and CPAP therapy.

Organisational and leadership achievements include Founding Central Sydney Cardiology — Australia’s only Academic Cardiology Practice, Co-founder of the Cardiovascular Program at Strathfield in 1991 and building deeper Academic and Teaching linkages with the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Sydney University. Board Member of the ResMed Foundation.

  • Advanced and Novel Cardiac imaging including 3D echo and strain imaging, novel stress echocardiography.
  • Newer Coronary Imaging (Photon Counting CTCA or PCCT), AI-enabled imaging analysis (CaRi-Heart®, Caristo.com). Advanced Cross-sectional Imaging Software (3mensio Medical Imaging B.V.).
